When should I remove a tree?

Wind and heavy rain can put severe stress on the roots and trunk. If a tree tips in a storm, it often means the roots were unhealthy or damaged before the storm. Trees leaning from root breakage usually do not survive well and should be removed by a professional. If a tipped tree does survive, it still poses a risk of falling at a later date. Young trees may survive if the root ball is intact and it can be pulled into a vertical position.

Unfortunately, some trees simply cannot be saved or are not worth saving. If a tree has already been weakened by disease, the trunk is split, or more than 50 percent of the crown is gone, the tree should be removed.

A Tree Damaged My Property! What do I do?

Storm damage is becoming more common. Even in little storms, weak trees are bound to fail—and occasionally they hit your house or cause damage to your property. Here's what you need to do:

  • Establish basic safety. If medical attention is needed, seek help first before calling for tree removal. If power or communication lines were involved, call your utility company. Do not try to handle power lines yourself.
  • File your insurance claim. You need to get your claim started and a claim number to work with a tree service being paid by insurance.
  • Find a tree service that takes insurance claims. Not all do, and it's important to ask before the job, or you risk cleanup delays or out-of-pocket expenses. 
  • Get a quote and hire a service. Ask for a site visit and written estimate before hiring the service.
  • Pay the tree service, and get reimbursed. Most tree services require payment upon completion, so you either need to wait for the insurance payment or wait to be reimbursed.
